About us

Narrow gauge railway of Aukštaitija, otherwise siaurukas, is a unique open air museum, which celebrates its 111th anniversary this year. A narrow-gauge railway line Panevėžys – Anykščiai - Rubikiai was built in 1899. This was the time of black engines and wooden carriages. At the beginning of the 20th century siaurukas was the main mechanical means of transport in the region of Aukštaitija (north-eastern Lithuania) for carrying people and goods such  as flax, bacons, sugar-beet, flour, butter, flax-seed, wood and sand. Farmers used to transport salt, fertilizers, burning oil and coal.

From the year 2001, narrow gauge railway is used only  for carrying passengers. Now it is a unique object of engineering heritage. Narrow gauge railway includes 20 monuments of the railway infrastructure, which belong to the Republic of Lithuania and other 22 objects of railway infrastructure. P/I “Narrow gauge railway of Aukštaitija“ is a non profit organisation, preserving and protecting this complex spreading in the area of 260 ha.
Trips on the narrow gauge railway are combined with different educational programs and cultural events. Exceptional holiday trips, charter trips and regular train services are offered. Our passegners are attracted by engineering heritage, other values of the old railway and more than fourty architectural, natural and historical objects, located near the narrow gauge railway. We collect historical material and the rolling stock of narrow gauge railway. Our trains are pulled by the locomotives TU-2.
