St. Anthony’s Train
Since ancient times Lithuanians were more eager to celebrate their name-days rather than birthdays. This nice tradition was refreshed by the Narrow Gauge Railway inviting all male and female persons named Anthony (Antanas and Antanina in Lithuanian) to go to Troškūnai, to St. Anthony‘s Feast celebrated there on June. After visiting a religious feast in a small town, persons from big cities feel especially blessed, as they can find true sincerity there in words, prayers and songs by grey-headed ladies. Everybody‘s heart thrills seeing a solemn procession going around the church with flags fluttering in breeze. Girls in white dresses cast flowers; the monstrance is glowing in the sun and incense blowing intoxicating smell. After the Mass, everybody is obsessed with buying at the nearby fair. Some are willing to bring home special home-made feast candies, while others are attracted by rosaries, saints’ pictures or religious souvenirs. Photos Andrius Repšys
