St. Johns’ Train
Traditionally celebrated in Lithuania on summer equinox, St. John’s Day is probably the most beautiful festival of the season, distinguished by its magic, ancient customs and, what is most important, a belief that on that day one may find a fern blossom and become the happiest person on earth. On June 23, the Narrow Gauge Railway invites everybody on the Johns’ train. Johns and Joannes are especially welcomed. When the travellers reached the Kuzmiškiai Forest, they gathered by St. John’s gate decorated in flowers and herbage. Jolly music was playing. Festival hostess Redhaired Jane helped to remember ancient Lithuanian customs to the guests. Girls sang special songs and made garlands from all kinds of flowers and herbs. Narrow gauge train travellers were looking for a fern blooming in the backwoods. In the evening, St. John’s fire was made. Everybody got involved in the most beautiful garland contest and tasted grilled food. The festival was crowed by impressive fireworks. Foto Andrius Repšys
