Train of National Heritage
Trips in September 19 – 26 continued the events, dedicated for the 110th anniversary of the Lithuanian narrow gauge railway. National heritage train in September 19 was one of these events. The trip was also part of the “Car-free day” project, so cyclists, their bicycles on a special platform, were among the passengers. At 11 o’clock the train departed from Panevėžys towards Surdegis. On the way a nice surprise waited for the passengers - a running steam engine, just like those that for the last time in Lithuania run more than 40 years ago. The steam engine was brought from Estonian Museum Railway in co-operation with a travel agency superkeliones.lt. When the train stopped in Raguvėlė, where the steam engine was waiting, passengers got off the train, examined the steam engine, and took pictures. After a short while everybody returned to their train and the trip continued. A group of travellers got off at Surdegis Station where the national heritage festival took place. Cyclists continued their trip further, towards Troskunai. Here they learned about the history of the Lithuanian narrow gauge railway and departed on a bicycle route called ‘Troškūnai – Surdegis: signs of culture and history’. Meanwhile the participants of the festival learned to weave sashes, treated themselves to Lithuanian cheeses, bread and honey, saw the performances of the folklore groups. The festival going to the end, cyclists arrived at Surdegis. Everybody shared their impressions of the trip, listened to the concert, and refreshed themselves with soup. Having dedicated the day for the knowledge of Lithuanian national and technical heritage in late afternoon participants of the festival returned to Panevėžys.
