110th Anniversary of Siaurukas - Hat Train
Hat train in 26 September, finished the events, dedicated to the 110th anniversary of the Lithuanian narrow gauge railway. Traditionally, the anniversary was celebrated in retro style. Passengers, who decided to take a trip on the hat train, came dressed up in very inventive hats. Way before the departure, a festive mood was in the air with cheerful accordion players and people gathering to the platform, chatting, admiring each other’s hats. After a short while the train stopped at the station in the forest, in a nearby forest ground the celebration with different attractions took place. Having found a comfortable place by the table, participants of the event watched the performance o a dance group “Miestelėnai”, listened for the best songs of the 1930’s and had a unique possibility to learn retro dances with a professional dancer. The dancing lessons were so interesting that everyone – old and young – stood in lines and learned foxtrot, salsa and other dances. Director of the Lithuanian narrow gauge railway, Gintaras Kerbedis greeted the employees who spent years working at the narrow gauge railway and shared his thought about the achievements of the year 2009: a new shed in the forest ground, reconstruction of 20 railway switches , new movement of volunteers, project ‘The development of the narrow gauge railway – an object of cultural heritage and tourism – in 2009-2011’ and lastly the trip on a train pulled by steam engine, which was brought from Estonia. The most important moment of the celebration was the hat parade where everyone had a chance to show their own hats. Judges appointed, the contest of the most beautiful, most inventive and most impressive hat started. After the awards guests were offered a piece of birthday cake. Photographer Tomas Stasevičius
