Train of Bishop Jonas Kauneckas
In 27 September, St. Matthew’s Church at Anykščiai celebrated its 110th anniversary. That day religious celebrations during the church festival took place at Anykščiai. On this occasion a special train was organized – the train of Panevėžys bishop Jonas Kauneckas. The train with 4 passenger carriages departed from Panevėžys Railway Station at 9.30 o’clock. During the trip to Anyk62iai, the bishop several times visited other carriages, spoke to people, blessed and distributed pictures of the Saint. Passengers were offered tea and coffee. After nearly two hours, the train arrived at Anykščiai Railway Station where a number of citizens and members of local authorities waited to see the bishop. Bishop met with the Councilor of the Apostolic Nunciature, Monsignor Francois Lantheaume, bishop emeritus Juozas Preikšas, dean of Anykščiai St. Matthew’s Church Stanislovas Krumpliauskas and the Mayor of Anykščiai Sigutis Obelevičius. Having got off the train, the bishop with pilgrims walked on foot to the St. Matthew’s Church and blessed the passersby. The bishop started the Mass, which was dedicated to the anniversary of the church, with his own impressions of the trip without concealing good moods. After the festivities, the bishop changed the plans of going by car and together with pilgrims and members of religious youth organisation returned to Panevėžys on train.
